Question of the Day: How Many iPods Have You Owned?

Yesterday's question involved how much digital music you currently own—if you took part you may have noticed that the distribution was fairly even, but there are plenty of people out there with seriously large collections. That got me thinking about where all this music is being stored—iPods in particular. As my own feeble collection has grown, and my desire for better hardware has increased, I have upgraded my iPod a grand total of 3 times. My guess is that figure is probably pretty average (or even low) when compared to a serious music fanatic. So, my question to you is: how many iPods have you owned?

  • one 4GB iPod Nano, and now an 8GB iPod Touch... More importantly 60GB of music, down from 110GB's :)

  • Ipod Mini-Traded for 360
    Video-Sold
    Shuffle1-Broken overheated battery..
    Shuffle2-Still use
    Ipod Nano Red 8gb Video-Sold
    Touch 16gb-Sold
    Classic-Still use

  • 23.9% of people are liars!

This question needs clarification (for me. I'm sure the question is fine, but I'm not.)

Does this include an iPhone? Does it include the ones I've bought my wife (since their use is essentially shared as is the musical collection, and it allows us to kind of stagger our upgrading?)

In any case, I definitely need to upgrade now. My current collection of "music I want to access" has outgrown my current iPod. Soon...soon.

  • Proud to say i've never owned an IPOD... why?
-98% of the songs are not listened to *looks at friends*
    - i use my psp, i think it's a lot better than an IPOD...

  • Oh and a 2g 10 gb, 3g 40gb, shuffle 1gb (original stick o' gum style), 4gb mini, 4gb new nano. The 40gb is style rockin, but the next one will be an iPhone.

  • I had 3. the last one was a U2 5th Gen. It's out of warranty.
The Hard Drive at any moment will crash.
I can't even get my music off using seunti or anything, it's too corrupt.
I can only listen to music off it.
Then to make the story even more tragic the Screen cracked.
    That was my last iPod.

  • That's a big ZERO for me. I've had two other players though.

  • Very tough question. I've owned the 15gb, the 20gb ipod. Then the iPod mini (green). Then a 40gb iPod. Then an iPod nano. Got a shuffle somewhere in between. Then I got a 60gb iPod. Then the iPhone. I know I have an iPod touch. Seems like a litte waste of money. I probably should have been a little wiser.

  • 1.. i even replaced the drive and battery in so that i wouldn't have to provide apple any more money. =)

  • If you don't need your iPod anymore, or it's broken, please don't throw it in the garbage! Use this page to find out how you can recycle it:

  • Three:

I had a 2nd Gen 10 GB that I dropped and it stopped working.

I had a 3rd Gen 30 GB that I still love dearly and whose interface I completely miss.

I now use a 4th gen 60 GB that was sold to me relatively cheap by a friend. It fits my music collection better, even if it is pretty thick.

Similar to LittlestLamshi, I use my PSP when my iPod is indisposed for whatever reason. I also use it for Podcasts since I hate iTunes and getting songs on/off the iPod can be a pain.

  • 1 30 GB ipod and hate every moment of it. Damn that thing, i have to use itunes any time i need to sync mp3s. i cannot change or edit playlist. i must have used it about 20 days in the last 2 year. its crap and a hype thing and utterly useless.

  • I've never owned an iPod, mostly because I have little use for one. I had a Dell DJ in college because I was somewhat anti-Apple, and it was a POS. I have nowhere to use an iPod now since I'm generally in my car or somewhere with a PC or laptop that I play music on. I would probably buy one if I had a bus or train commute.

  • In typical Lamshi fashion, i give you...

  • @djdare:
    Excuse you?

I have never owned an iPod and I am most definitely not a liar.

My sister owns an iPod though.

  • 60GB photo, 80GB video, 160GB video, iPhone 8GB

  • My list would get more interesting if you didn't limit to to just iPods-- I had one of those early Sony "pens" which was really an ATRAC player. For a while, I also used my Treo as an MP3 player in lieu of a real MP3 player.

If you just look at iPods, I just picked up my 3rd. If you look at all the portable digital music players I've ever had, I'm technically at 7.

  • All "classic"-configuration iPods; since my primary music/podcast-listening time is during my commute, quantity trumps svelteness:

    5GB 1st-generation with a scroll wheel
10GB 3rd-generation (the one with the for touch-circles above the big touchy-circle)
    40GB 4G (the iPod Photo)
and my current 60GB 5G (iPod Video)

Haven't seen the need to upgrade to a Classic, Touch, or iPhone yet. Still have the 5GB 1G, but the other two I sold off when I bought their successor.

  • NONE

  • 4 gig Sansa ... almost 800 songs.
Only thing I don't like is the monochrome display with poor backlighting.

When this one dies, I'll probably get another Sansa, or possibly anything with a GOOD display that uses AAA or AA batteries.

Mp3 players with special / non-removable batteries won't end up in my collection :/

  • I've had 7 or 8 MP3 players, none of them iPods, though.

  • 0 for me.

used to have an iriver. now i just use my phone. V3xx with a 4gig micro SD card. never understood all the hype with ipods.

  • Well its interesting to see how closely this reflects apple market share. Apple supposedly owns 75% of the MP3 player market and according to this survey 24% of people don't own an ipod, nice. Although this comparison operates under the assumption that everyone here has an MP3 player of some kind.

  • I went though 3 of the original stick-of-gum iPod shuffles... but only 'cause I pulled the guts of it's god-awful case and stuck them into a modified 9-volt battery. Friends kept wanting me to nerd out their iPods.

  • I've owned:

    - Creative MuVo 128MB
    - Rio Carbon 5GB, refurbished
    - some horrible 4GB Chinese knockoff
    - Zune 30, refurbished

I thought I might someday pick up an iPhone, but nah, probably an Android phone instead.

  • Zero iPods, but one iRiver and one Sansa.

  • i've had the 3G...the the 4G...then the Color 4G ( Photo ) ... three 30g 5th generation...one was stolen...the other i bought for my car...and the third was black so i thought it was purdy......I also had a stick of gum shuffle and one of those new shuffles...that's..uhmm *counts on fingers* 8!!! damn!!!!....but i use an ARCHOS 605 160gb now....hmmm..... not a single period in this damn post....

  • I've only owned one myself, an 80 GB 5th generation iPod, though I've bought more than one for my wife.
I bought her a 2nd gen Nano last year. Then at Christmas I bought her a 3rd gen Nano when it seemed her first one was on the fritz (it recovered after she set up the new one, but there was no going back then).
And I just bought her a 16GB iPod Touch for her birthday this weekend (ssshhhhhh).

  • ive owned every iPod introduced. and not ONE has ever given me a problem. Ive loved each and every one

  • 0 ipods for me.

used to own and iRiver. now i just use my V3xx cell phone. 4gig micro SD card 4tw.

  • @liveinvt: Why not recycle here instead?

  • ipods are overpriced - may be prettier than other portable players but, like all apple products, offer less functionality for 25-30% more money.

  • 6 out of 4 people have problems with understanding fractions....

but you won't see me complaining ;)

  • @devianaut:
    agreed...

  • @mattw6789: But do you have every iPod ever introduced in every color introduced? Do you have the U2 models? Do you have the HP-branded 4Gs? I doubt your commitment to Steve Motion.

  • @Lstormy10: I apologize I was merely utilizing the little known literary device sarcasm... plus I'm a bastard, get over your "ooh I'm so anti-apple it's almost cool" self.

Chill out it was just a joke.

  • I've owned a 20 GB 4G Color, bought it right when it came out. That one died a year and a half later. Then I bought the 30 GB 5G that I still use today that is almost full. When that one dies or gets full, whichever one comes first, i'll buy the 80GB classic.

  • This time I had to vote seven times to see the results...

  • I was there since day 1 with Gen 1....15 different iPods so far...

  • i had a mini that my brother gave me.

i currently have a 5.5 gen. really, its the 3rd one. the first had a corrupted hard drive, and the second that best buy sent back had a faulty hold switch. this one has lasted about 3 months so far.

  • @dingus: okay seriously last post, but I fucking love that, because we named the group I smoke with Sparkle Motion. Fantastic reference, peace I'm out.

  • I have the u2 5th gen I got for a present, dont use it that often because I dont listen to music but I might start using it with super duper

  • None.

I had two Creative MuVos and then used my phones after that.

Currently use an N95 for music/video.

  • let's see...

    1. ipod photo 60gb *
    2. ipod nano 4gb (black plastic)
    3. ipod nano 4gb (silver aluminum)
    4. ipod shuffle 1gb (silver)
    5. ipod shuffle 2gb (red) *
    6. ipod classic 160gb *
    7. iphone 8gb *

(* = own now). thank god for craigslist... i can actually justify buying new ipods if i can get a decent amount for my old ones :)

  • One iPod (Gen 3) and one iPhone. Wife has a iPod Fatty and a clip shuffle.

  • Wife and I bought a video ipod when it came out. 30G. Still in great shape cause we keep in in a solid clear plastic case. Mostly used in the car or on planes and in hotel rooms w/ speakers. Never used it for just walking around cause I didn't want to carry it AND phone.

Now my iPhone I find I listen to all the time. I love the all-in-one-ness.

  • i'm not anti apple as i am pro piracy, so i have never owned an ipod, plus i'm cheap, your paying a majority of that money for the name..for half that i can buy a generic one. but i admit they are cool

  • 2.

    A 4gb 2nd gen nano - FREE from Apple.

    A 16gb iPod Touch.

The temptation to buy another iPod when the newer larger memory models come out (cough* 32gb), but I think I'll keep my 16gb for the rest of time....

  • Wow, I expected much more on the 8 or more. I have 2 iPhones, 4 nano's, 1 30 gig U-2, 1 20 Gig, 1 mini, 2 20 Gig...
