Sure, you might play a game or two on your cute little Mac, but that doesn't make you a gamer. (If you were, you'd have a PC.) If you're about to rear up and flame me, chill out, Razer has a new gaming mouse for just for you. The Death Adder is an 1800dpi righty with a 1ms response time. Say what you want about gaming on Macs, you can't possibly defend using the Mighty Mouse in fragfests. Death Adder drops May 20 for $60. [Razer]

I remember back when I was in like 7th grade, there was this one guy I knew who had a Mac, and he had this surgery game where you were a doctor and had to remove somebody's appendix. It was intriguing at the time, but I was never able to avoid killing the patient. Perhaps this mouse could have helped me save lives.
That's the only game I've ever seen on a Mac.
You can run WoW on macs. But that's so four years ago.
I'm not a gamer so I've got a serious question. How does this mouse do anything special that a regular mouse does not do (other than have a cool snake on it)?
... Anyone else feel occasionally embarrassed by stuff like this?
From the maker of Condoms for Nuns!
I believe that all Blizzard Games (Starcraft, WoW, Warcraft)come in a Mac version. Is this true?
@GeekyNerdGuy: We had Apple IIs when I was in elementary thru high school. Arkanoid, Goofy Golf, and The Oregon Trail..., that's pretty much the extent of my apple gaming knowledge. (not counting emulation mind you)
Mx510 > All, 5 years old + and still going!
@newgalactic: ...are there any other popular/good games that run on a Mac?
@dry-roasted-peanuts: no, I'm not a gamer. If I was I would own a PS3 or a Wii, or maybe even an Xbox.
@newgalactic: how did you quote yourself? Thats creepy ! Stop it!
It's a good game but it's not popular. and my "I'm not a gamer" statement still stands, the escape velocity series from Ambrosia was good.
Okay even that is five years ago.
*gasp*
a right mouse button on a mac?
Gaming Mouse for Mac? That's strange. I never knew Photoshop was a game.
@bosskev: That's a very good question! And I might have some answers on that very soon. Hint, hint.
Some decent (depending on your taste) games for Mac that aren't necessarily brand new include SimCity 4, Civilization 4, all Blizzard games, ... okay, that's about it. Now I remember why I have a PC for games.
@Log1c: Same, but MX500 over here. I wish I had a body counter on there to know how many people I've killed with it. Probably a small country's worth.
@Log1c: I dunno - I've got a mx 1000 that's been going for a bit short of that (4.5ish?) and it's damn comfortable. Plus, I don't know that any more precision would help me - dunno how much more precise it can be anyway.
@GeekyNerdGuy: That's funny. I remember playing that game on an Amiga.
@MrBlahBlah: It's really what motorists would call a 'dead pedal'. Calm down.
You guys have this all wrong. The reason there are no Mac gamers is because this mouse did not yet exist for the platform. Now this is available, the Mac is officially a gaming platform.
Minus the games, of course.
@newgalactic:
Yeah it's true. You can also play Civ IV on it too. And Tiger Woods, and Madden, and Need for Speed, and Guitar Hero 3, and Halo, and Quake IV, and Doom 3, Age of Empires, Battlefield, yada yada yada(although a lot of games are done through Cider, which is cheating but at least they're there)
Mac Gamer = Bootcamp Windows
@newgalactic: I get that we're all being incredibly hip and cool...but Halo on the Mac played beautifully. Just saying.
@GeekyNerdGuy: Life And Death? I love that game... there was no way to keep anyone alive. Worst doctor ever.
And here's an oldie but goodie:
+ Watch video
hey, I run Crysis just fine on my MacBook Pro under Boot Camp... most PCs at Best Buy can't do that even!
Has there ever, ever been a better game than Lode Runner?
So, what makes this different from a regular Death Adder? I've been using a Logitech G5 for over a year now. You can use pretty much any USB mouse with a mac. Also, Mac's have had multi-button mice for a couple of years as standard. It's called the Mighty Mouse, and it doesn't look like it's multi-button but it is.
good, i got a deathadder. hopefully it's the same hardware and only needs drivers. i can finally get more precise mouse movement on my hackintosh.
@Goodnightbabytron: Lode Runner Rules... [going to dig out my Apple II+ version on 5.25" floppy]
Escape Velocity is where it's at for mac gaming. Oh and for that MMORPG kick www.clanlord.com .. sweet. (PC as well now!)
@MrBlahBlah:
"a right mouse button on a mac?"
What do I use it for? It looks like there are two mouse buttons on the side of the mouse too... The extra buttons probably just bring up context sensitive help for the "left" mouse button.
Anything worth doing with a mouse can be done with one mouse button.
@matt buchanan: Oh man yeah! Hell I have 5000 kills in Cod4 with only 1 day of playtime, I can't even imagine how much time I racked up in 1.6!@Flugenhiber: I got the 510 because it was wired, so I never had to worry about batteries.
niche market or what?
EA is putting out all their games on Mac. Battlefield, Star Wars Battlefront, Lego Star Wars, Call of Duty series, The Sims....
[store.apple.com]
It's not the mouse that's important, you nerds. It's the configuration software that comes with it!
Oy.
@bosskev: That's a good question. I have an MX518 for a couple years now and the only reason I chose it in the first place was to match the whole color scheme with my monitor and keyboard. I guess it's suppose to run smoother.
@brutek: Every few years I look around to see if anyone has updated it to run in OSX...so far no luck.
A mouse with higher sensitivity is nice for gaming and even some apps. where you want a mouse to track accurately and smoothly.
So yes, better mice do make a noticeable difference. Now going from 1800 dpi to 2000 dpi probably isn't going to feel much different, but a standard 600 dpi to 1200 or so is very noticeable.
two things:
1) are lefty gamers that rare?
2) I spent a lot on upgrades to my mac pro to be able to play all the games I was told I was missing out on. played crysis (bootcamp) for a bit, now I just play my consoles. PC gaming sucks, yes even on widoze.
@newgalactic:
Bungie only made Mac games until Microsoft bought the entire studio to get Halo.
I haven't played any of their games besides Halo but I have heard some of their original games were quite good for the time.
@chelsel:
Yeah, and most gamers don't buy gaming PCs at Best Buy either... besides...
Gaming on a laptop is the same as gaming on a Mac with bootcamp, you're still limited by hardware severely simply because of the design. (One reason why I never understood gaming on a laptop. The second being that I really don't think I could get into a decent system hogging epic game while on the go... but hey, something is better than nothing.) Even with new hardware, you'd pay the cost of a Mac plus the cost of the hardware which would be less cost efficient than just building a computer which would inevitably run it faster and could be Hackintosh'd.
The Myth game series was both PC and Mac ... I think.
MrBlahBlah:
Hasen't Apple offered a "two button mouse" for three years? I mean, no one is still whining about the NHL strike so why are you still whining about the two button mouse?
@duckandcover:
Myth was published by bungie and had a simultaneous mac/windows release, so yes, you are correct sir.
I'm sure that in the annals of MAC Gaming your "Bejeweled 2" score will be held high as an example of that kind of thing.
Why isn't it in white?
@Goodnightbabytron:
just see if you can find a good old emulator - lode runner i believe was available on apple ][s and there are apple ][ emulators i believe...
Hey! I've been using a DeathAdder right now on my Mac for a few months now.
Oh wait, I see - they turned off the nasty "blue light" by default in the mac version. This is controlled by the driver in the PC.
It should just be a driver update, not sure why they're calling this a new product.
Gaming on a Mac is like photoshopping/video editing on a PC. You can do it but its easier and more enjoyable on the other OS.
I can't think of anything to defend using the Mighty Mouse for.
Oh, c'mon now. Yes, you can play WoW on a mac- but you can also play the old tomb raider games! And the old Rainbow Six games! And Diablo II!!! And... oh, wait, those are all like 5-10 years old...
I feel terribly ashamed that I see cleavage on that mouse.
@someToast: Well, shove one down the throats of blowhards, shuts 'em right up!
Hmph, I wish they'd just release mac drivers for the Lachesis.
@kahri: Actually, most of Razer's goods are ambidextrous. So I'm kind of surprised they ported one of the right-handers over.
Yeesh, another flamewar. For an appropriate resolution to this thread, scroll down to the comment by John Watts here: [www.reghardware.co.uk]
PS - Any commenter who has a star by his name should know the difference between MAC and Mac *coughstridercough*. Just sayin'.
@MagnoliaBoy: What?? You never had the Microzine games? With that fantastic voyage type game? Nora Pinephron - the famous doctor who lives in the target body you're exploring? I'm NOT crazy. These things were real!
@ripfire4: Planet Miners on a TRS-80, anyone?
* Gasp *
we have 5 buttons on our mice, and our trackpads have been able to scroll, right click, left click with different tapping gestures for years...
