Not all the tech we buy needs to be brand new and manufactured specifically to fit our needs. With a little ingenuity and cheapness, you can rig up common household objects to do the job just as well. Here's an example of such a thing, using a $6 hot water bottle as a laptop stand for your lap instead of buying regular ones five times as much. It keeps your thighs away from the burning laptop and cools both it and your legs at the same time. Very useful for a smoldering summer day. Careful that it doesn't spring a leak though. lol
i d ont usually say that
this fits right in with the 2 old phone books i use to prop up my LCD.
Idea seems cool (heh) but water + laptop = trouble.
Don't those bottles usually get sweaty all over the outside? It would look like you pee'd your pants and got some on your laptop. Genius!
My mini-refrigerator rack works perfectly fine. Sure it leaves indentations on my legs, but at least it isn't burning off my leg hair.
Holy Canoli, Giz you actually posted what a DoucheBag is!?
GAWD!
Condensation would be a bitch
Like I said. Only 8 bucks.
What, me? Pass up a chance to electrocute my genitals? No way!
How comes my laptop smells like Vinegar now?
Have you seen a hot iron sitting on top of some plastic?
Your MBP will not do any better on the hot water bottle pictured above.
I like all the _theories_ about how this won't work but I think I'll stick with the actual 2+ years of experience that have demonstrated it's pretty viable. :-)
(and in keeping with -that- theme,I could use an enema bottle to keep my wireless mouse cool...lol)
I bought a wire mesh serving tray from the clearance rack in Bed,Bath and Beyond for $1.99...it's about 2 inches wider than my 17" laptop, and the legs are about 2" high...I can set it on the bed (or my lap) and get perfect air flow. I think Ikea sells the same one for $4.99,it looks like the wire mesh wastebasket and desk set they sell.
@ripfire4: Good thinking! But it's so...cheesy to NOT spend $50+ on a lap-protector!
I keed, I keed :)
@slstsang: You've obviously never boiled water in a paper cup. Regardless, any humidity is going to make an ice pack sweat, so there is a limit to how cold to go with this sort of water cooling. To avoid leaks, a better route to go is probably a hot/cold gel pack for about the same price.
