Tim Dubitsky's Hood.e concept was originally intended as a safer way for his nephew to walk to school and listen to music at the same time. Apparently, his route takes him across busy streets which could be dangerous for someone wearing earbuds or headphones. With the speakers embedded in the hood, users can ditch the earbuds and cords while still being able to hear the music and ambient noise. At this point, the Hood.e has not made it past the concept stage, but the idea is definitely a hell of a lot better than some of the other crap out there. UPDATE: Hood.e is not a concept, it is an actual product you can purchase now for $160. [Hood.e via Core77]

Sorry someone had that idea out there already. This is not new.
I can so see that kid getting jacked
Of course, if he puts the hood up to hear the music, he'll be blocking out his peripheral vision, and there will still be music interfering with his hearing.
That ought to be safer at crosswalks...
Generational reasons for tinnitus:
1945 - WWII bombing raids fighting against Nazi imperialism
1969 - Machine gun fire from a tragic war in Vietnam
2008 - Blasting "Party Like a Rockstar" from your Hood.e speakers
they had a kid version of this at gap like three years ago, except it was a radio and the controls were on the sleve, it was pretty sweet untill mine broke

How do you wash it?
@visionep: Detach the hood?
Whoever decides to cross the street without looking to see if a car must really want to have a face to face meeting with God.
@visionep: pfft who washes their clothes [Pops off the top of Axe body spray]
Anyone who plays music out loud in public = nuisance. No one else wants to listen to your shitty music collection.
The whole "making it safer for your kid to walk to school" becomes moot when said kid gets beat up for playing Justin Timberlake through speakers on his way to said school.
I knew a kid in high school (yea, that was a while ago) who got hit and killed by a semi because he was wearing headphones while riding his skateboard. I think this is a good idea, but I'm not sure how much better it would be than just turning the music down a little bit.
I personally like it because those ear bud things hurt my ears and regular headphones make me look like I'm trying to land a plane.
Can't wait for 7.1 Dolby version. I heard the sub is in the ass of your jeans.
This isn't anything new...
Bought one for my son about two years ago. The speakers are actually washable. Sound quality is not all that great but what does a seven year old really care as long as he can listen to his iPod. I just like the fact that I don't have to listen to High School musical in the car.
...I'd say we just let the psuedo-hipsters destroy their hearing.
@Adam420: I think Burton Snowboards made one a couple of years ago for a jacket--bluetooth enabled too
I agree, I wouldn't want to hear most people's music, BUT, this is sure better than anything wearable I've seen in a while too.
Not Bad!!
Faslane :-)
Not better than Radio Rahim's carry-on luggage.
This would be nice... BUT:
1- Sound quality will suck on speakers that size, period.
2- Cellphone ringtones are bad enough.
3- If those speakers are heavy (they usually are), the hood won't stop at the guy's head.
4-???
5-no profit.
Motorola has/had something like this - it got discontinued and they dropped the price of it like a stone.
A kid at my school has a sweatshirt like this. Its from a popular Label that I recognized but cant think of it right now.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi:
1) My JBL Creatures would fit in there (without the enclosure)
2) Unless it's in GTA IV
3) JBL's are light
I brought this 5 times before when it was called the burton audex... and it has bluetooth for your phone as well... 650 for each... the Mark XIII one i got was even more... AND the sound quality is realllly good
@TheManator:
Actually they didnt drop it... they release limited numbers of it every year... 3 different styles
The other day on the subway there was this teenager using his PSP like a radio, blasting shitty music into the uncomfortable strained silence of morning rush hour, completely oblivious to the fact that everyone on the fucking train was thinking about punching him in the mouth because of it.
Most kids are dicks. I'm sure these will sell very well.
This was done earlier this decade. Uuh, Google it.
The true test of is it cool: How bad is the kid beat up by thugs who want his jacket.
@Tracert: Those are the days you need PSP snatchers...I swear they're never around when you need one!
Just don't take mine...I'm one of the goodguys (headphones)
I can see it now. Some kid is at the back of the bus jammin to their music and soon as they gets off the bus, they get jumped and robbed!
@Stacky Botrus: You were done earlier this decade...
This makes about as much sense as installing cup holders in cars.
Oh, wait ...
why dont they install those those vibration speakers in baseball caps, then youd still hear ambient noise and you wouldnt be bugging the shit out of anybody
@dMo: Axe Body Spray smells worse than not showering for two weeks.
Nooooooooo the chavs now have more ways to force music onto the public (normally done through tinny mobile phones).
Also, a friend made a portable travel cushion with speakers like this for a DT project
Most of the L.A. teens traveling on the bus that I see only have one earplug in their ear. I guess Rap/Hip-Hop doesn't need stereo. The ones that have both earphones inserted have it turned up so loud I can hear the tinny beat from half a bus away.
Want now. It sucks that it isn't my style though. heh.
Doesn't seem that hard to make on your own. Just dig up a pair of headphones you're willing to cannabilize and spend a few min finding the right spot for the speaker to go and sow them in.
easy.
