A company called Lextech has created an application that lets you control surveillance devices via your iPhone. As well as watching the action on the phone, the app also lets you control the cameras via its touchscreen. See the system in action in a couple of videos after the jump.
I guess this means no more security guards numbing their arses as they sit, bored, behind banks of monitors. [Lextech via Nowhere Else 2.0]

From iPhone to iSpy?
when can I get it?
That's pretty cool.
remote buddy lets you do this very well and cheaply through a web cam on a vnc enabled mac. no PTZ control yet though...
i guess this mean jailbroken iphone too..lol
Nope, no jailbreak involved (I hope I can say legally that we're working with the official stuff).
We'll have a much more general purpose version ready for release in the next couple months.
Oh man, now they will make another Revenge of the nerds...
I would like too see it.
Is Lextech a subsidary of Lexcorp? Is Luthor finally making his move into taking over the world?
I don't think this would mean more security guards sitting on their arses, instead I would expect they would be able to more completely monitor the area they are tasked with surveying. While they're doing their rounds they could check on other areas of the building.
I know the "numbing their arses," comment was to balance the snark ratio for the post but this app seems to be one of the more innovative uses for the iPhone.
I hate this word "app". Why not just say "program"? People know what a program is. Application is a very vague word too. What have you techies got against English? Pull those baggy pants up, cut your damn hair and speak English!
@Jamo: Agreed, but this tech isn't new. I work in the security industry and mobile video surveillance is fairly common. The innovative part is porting it to the iPhone.
@Groggy Banana: They were going to make a remake - the dude who played Pedro from Napaleon Dynamite was going to be in it - it got cancelled thank god.
I do this with my IP Cameras at home and viewcommander on my Tilt.
@TheManator: Based on this gimmick they just might remake the remake. All it needs is a trailer, making people think they're trying something new: "New nerds, new gadgets, same perversity!"
I still would watch it.
yes, because you want all your security cameras to be monitored by an iphone that belongs to a security guard.
i reckon the next iphone app to be developed will have the ability to crack safes, (so you don't have to google it).
Helio (korean version anyways) had video surveillance over phone for a while.
All this damn support and I can't get a simple WM6 based lie detector? Curse you fanboy coders!!
That is probably the coolest thing I have ever seen on a cell phone. That would be awesome for a plain clothes security guard to carry around in a big dept. store.
This can already be done via a web browser on public cameras. It's just taking it a step further and making it a web application that can control YOUR stuff. This is wicked cool IMO.
cute cat, what's his name?
annoying customer
