Earthquake survivors buried under tonnes of rubble normally owe their lives to drinking their own pee. Not so for Japanese aid worker Miyuki Konnai, who says her laptop helped her through the ordeal.

Following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkey on October 23 that killed more than 600 people, Konnai headed to the disaster zone to help. Sadly, a smaller 5.7 tremor struck on November 9, bringing down the hotel in which she was staying.

Being buried beneath the rubble wasn’t great for Konnai, especially given that she’s afraid of the dark. Fortunately, she had something to keep her company.

“When I finally managed to open my left eye slowly, there was a ray of light I could see in what I thought was complete darkness. That light gave me a relief and gave me a hope to live. That was the light from the computer I was using.”

Fortunately she was rescued five hours later. No mention of what she posted to Facebook during that time, though. [Reuters ; Image: USACEpublicaffairs]
