Some people just have to have lyrics in their music. Those people are suckers. Mogwai is for non-suckers, and for post-rock newbies “Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home” is fantastic way to start. And in general it’s just a great jam.
Off the Scottish band’s critically acclaimed debut Young Team, “Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home” exhibits the mellowed out sort of vamping you’d expect from a post-rock tune, but with a crescendo and apex that really brings the heat in a way you wouldn’t be able to predict from the way things sound out of the gate. Aside from having a killer bass-line, Yes! I Am a Long Way From Home also makes spare but excellent use of distorted guitars and some tight, conservative drumming.
