Canada’s new Liberal government is committed to bringing 10,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year (not long left!). Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a “whole of Canada effort” to integrate “10,000 new Canadians”, and one cell carrier is actually responding.

Wind Mobile, one of the smaller and cheaper carriers, has promised the “basic necessity of mobile communication” to all refugees in the Greater Toronto Area in a fairly major way: a free handset, and two years of free service.

It’s unclear exactly what the handsets and plan will look like, but the carrier is soliciting donations for phones, so it’s more likely to be dumbphones and voice plans. But hey, it’s also concrete proof that all of Canada is chipping in to help refugees, rather than, for example, trying to out-xenophobe each other.
