It’s not just you. The major AI chatbots are currently experiencing outages or degraded performance right now. And it’s not clear why.
Users report OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, xAI’s Grok, and Google’s Gemini have all seen some form of outage on Thursday. Perplexity users have not reported any issues.
Reached for comment over email around 11:40 a.m. ET, a spokesperson for OpenAI directed Gizmodo to the ChatGPT status page, writing, “We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.” But when Gizmodo checked, the status page read: “We are still experiencing degraded performance.”
The company sent an update at 12:43 p.m. ET that reads: “A routing error starting around 7:43am PT on Thursday, September 3 made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across platforms. As of about 8:17 a.m. PT on Thursday, a solution was successfully implemented and is continuing to be monitored.”
A spokesperson for Anthropic told Gizmodo around 11:48 a.m. ET that, “Claude is mostly back up after an infrastructure issue caused a partial outage across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the Claude API. We will share updates on our status page as we continue to restore service.”
The Anthropic spokesperson added, “We know Claude is part of how many of you get work done, and we appreciate your understanding.”
Google and xAI didn’t immediately respond to Gizmodo’s inquiries. Down Detector shows the problems at the major chatbots seem to have started after 9:00 a.m. ET on Thursday. But Anthropic is absolutely correct that many people have started to rely on AI chatbots in ways that can really disrupt their workday.
Anthropic sent an update to Gizmodo at 1:17 p.m. ETP “Claude is fully back up after an infrastructure issue caused a partial outage across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the Claude API earlier today. Service was restored at 16:16 UTC.”
