Rogue One may have just arrived in theaters, but one of its characters is already heading to the small screen with an appearance in Star Wars Rebels.
Did I say heading to the small screen? I should’ve said...heading back!
That’s right, Saw Gerrera will be returning to his television roots with an appearance on season 3 of Star Wars Rebels. How was this incredible piece of information uncovered? A poster at Toys R Us. Sometimes the biggest of news can come from the smallest places.
Saw Gerrera made his Star Wars debut on the animated series The Clone Wars, and is currently being played by Forest Whittaker in Rogue One. He’s the first character from an animated Star Wars series to transition into a live-action film. I won’t spoil what happens to his character in the movie, mainly because Star Wars Rebels takes place years before the main events of Rogue One and A New Hope, so it doesn’t really matter in this case.
Given the show’s timeline, I’d love to see it go into Saw Gerrera’s actions before he moved to Jedha, and why he split from the Rebel Alliance to form the Partisans. Maybe we’ll learn why he needs to use a breathing apparatus, or why he’s got those robot feet. It could even dive further into Saw’s relationship with Galen Erso, which was explored in the prequel book Catalyst.
In any case, it’s exciting to see this character moving through so many different Star Wars properties, especially since he originally started out in a George Lucas-helmed TV show that never happened. Star Wars Rebels returns to Disney XD with the second half of season 3 on January 7, 2017.
