I can’t help but look at these giant desktop replacement laptops like the Acer Aspire 1714SMI and think what a bright future there is for LAN gamers. I’m going to Tribal-Wars East, a 500 person LAN party in Chantilly, Virginia, in July, and as I’m looking at LCD flat panels and other portable hardware to make the trip less harrowing, it’s hard not to look at the 3.4GHz P4, 1GB of RAM, and nVidia GeForce FX Go5700 of the Acer machine and see not a too-large laptop, but an extremely portable gaming rig. Sure, it’s well over $2,000, but with built-in DVD burning (including DVD-RAM, of all things) and a 17-inch screen, it’s not hard to start considering moving to a two-laptop lifestyle — one chunky one for gaming, and a lightweight one for actual, everyday lugging.
