Amazon’s running one of their “depends on what your favorite color is” tech deals on the AirPods Max 2 wireless over-ear headphones. Four of the five color models of these premier-level ANC cans are marked down by $70, to just $479. But if you’re good with the Blue model, you can knock that number down even more to just $449.
The color only matters for the price. All of the AirPods Max 2 models run Apple’s H2 chip, and the main result is noise cancellation rated at up to 1.5 times better than the first-generation AirPods Max. That improvement shows up most clearly in mid-frequency noise like office HVAC, or cabin drone on a plane, where the original was already considered best-in-class. Adaptive Audio adjusts the cancellation level automatically as your environment changes, so you’re not toggling between modes manually when you step outside or into a louder space. Conversation Awareness goes a step further and lowers whatever you’re playing when it detects that you’ve started speaking.
Advanced Customization
Personalized Spatial Audio uses the TrueDepth camera on a compatible iPhone or iPad to map your ear shape, then adjusts the soundstage to your specific geometry. The result is a more consistent three-dimensional presentation than the generic spatial audio processing you get from headphones that don’t have access to that kind of sensor input. Dynamic head tracking keeps the audio anchored to the source as you turn your head, which matters most for movie watching and for anything mixed in Dolby Atmos.
Pressing and holding the listening mode button activates real-time Live Translation through Apple Intelligence, converting speech in another language into your preferred one as it happens. That’s genuinely useful, but Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or later, so the feature is locked out on older hardware and Android phones.
Powerful But Plush
The physical design carries over the knit-mesh canopy and memory foam ear cushions from the first-gen Max, with telescoping arms for fit adjustment. The USB-C port replaces Lightning and doubles as the charging port, so the same cable handles these headphones and your iPhone. Hardware is identical across all five colors; the price difference between Blue and the others is purely preferential.
At the full-freight $549, the AirPods Max 2 sit at the high end of a competitive segment. Sony’s XM5 is $198 at Amazon right now and the XM6 runs $450, putting the Max 2’s Blue price at essentially the same level as the current Sony flagship. What the AirPods Max 2 offers that Sony can’t match is Apple ecosystem depth: automatic device switching, Personalized Spatial Audio with individual ear mapping, and Apple Intelligence features that work without additional setup. $449 is a good price overall, and listeners already in that ecosystem, it’s a real score.
