Gizmodo’s favorite grey-market MP3 supplier AllofMP3.com is under investigation by the Russian police on behalf of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry of Moscow (their RIAA). While AllofMP3 has forever maintained that they purchased their licenses in bulk from a clearinghouse, (Costco?) through the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society, now the IFPI is saying those are hardly legit. Or not legit at all. The days of 10 cent songs may be coming to an end, at least from this outlet.
The Moscow MP3 Police have until March 7 to decide how to act. It should be noted that AllofMP3 has always maintained that their service is only legal in Russia, and that they do “not keep up with the laws of different countries and is not responsible the actions [sic] of non-Russian users,” so all of us using the service were skating on thin legal ice already. And I thought Russian grey markets were known for their trustworthyness!
