How’s this for a double-whammy: Apple, and now Amazon, are both said to be working on “digital locker” services, which would store users’ downloads music and movies in the cloud. This would back-up their purchases in case of loss, but also allow them to re-download them to other devices.

As Amazon sells all sorts of digital stuff now—music; movies; TV shows; books and apps—their digital locker service would be insanely popular. And that’s if it were paid-for—imagine if it were free?

CNET’s sources are claiming the service could be announced as early as next week, and could also let customers store other, non-Amazon-purchased items in their lockers too. [CNET]
