App of the Day: CNN for iPad

CNN's new iPad app utilizes big images and high quality video to make news more visually engaging than it's ever been before. And let me tell you: it's a hell of a lot more fun than pecking through headlines.

What is it?

CNN, iPad, free. CNN's redesigned iPad app feels how a tablet-optimized news app should—it offers several ways to sift through news, most of which are image-based, it makes commenting on and sharing articles a snap, and it's got high quality video baked in at every turn.

Who's it good for?

Anyone with an iPad who reads the news.

Why's it better than alternatives?

It cleanly marries CNN's articles and multimedia offerings with an interface that wouldn't make sense anywhere but a tablet. You get several ways to browse news items but the experience is never needlessly complex. And things like big picture browsing and one-touch access to CNN's live TV stream are an interesting features hat makes the app seem more like a CNN hub than just a news reader. And, hey, CNN's iPhone app is free now, too.

How could it be even better?

The image-heavy UI means that scrolling can be less-than-silky on occasion, and sometimes I triggered the wrong action when there were multiple overlapping swipeable elements (vertical for reading through an article and horizontal for going from one to the next).
