This BusinessWeek article details some of the troubles that IBM has had producing PowerPC chips, the same ones that power Apple’s G5 PowerMacs and Xserves. The snarl in manufacturing has caused delays for Apple’s upgrades to the line and make’s Steve Jobs’s promise of 3.0GHz PowerMacs by summer look increasingly less likely, although thankfully the Fishkill plant appears to ramping up successful production yields again, so there’s an outside chance. Even if you’re not an Apple fan, you might want to pay attention to IBM’s ability to press out silicon: they’re set to produce processors for all three of the next-generation console gaming platforms.
