Based on a recently granted patent, Apple's not too impressed by the current approaches to 3D content and has a better technology in mind: A system which allows multiple people to view 3D images from any angle—without glasses.
Basically, the system would work like this:
[E]ach pixel would be projected onto a reflective, textured surface, which is then bounced into a viewer's left and right eye separately, producing the 3D, or stereoscopic, effect. [The system] would sense the locations of both eyes of each viewer, so multiple people could watch from a variety of angles.
Sounds confusing? It is, but it could also be a great approach to 3D content and eliminate some of the visual distortions we experience when trying to view it. Of course, so far there's only a patent and a bunch of ideas, meaning that there's no guarantee that Apple will actually explore this technology further. [CNET]
