Apple Store Makeover Means NFC iPhone 5? (Updated)

Some secret work is being done on Apple Stores across the country, shrouded in typical occult Apple mystery. Nobody’s sure what’s about to be revealed, but BGR claims NFC gear is being hooked up—suggesting an NFC iPhone 5.

The details of the rumor are hardly details at all—BGR cites “new tables installed in stores that have different wiring compared to Apple’s standard tables,” and a claim that “Apple’s POS devices—its iPod touch-based wireless payment terminals—recently all went offline for “maintenance” for an entire day” as evidence for an NFC iPhone. Not exactly a slam dunk rumor by any means. [BGR]

Update: A source of ours tells us the “new tables” aren’t, in fact, new, and are already in use at a couple high traffic Apple Stores. But most importantly, they don’t contain any NFC tech. As well, our tipster tells us the iPod Touch-based POS units going down is a routine event, most likely due to a mundane software update. So.
