With the introduction of Windows XP Media Center Edition and Sony, Gateway, and others pushing their PCs as digital home entertainment hubs, Michael Rogers of Newsweek wonders whether its time for Apple to dive in and add TV tuners, remote controls, and TiVo-like recording capabilities to the Mac:
From my years of covering Steve Jobs, I suspect that he’s probably not a big television fan. And of course one of the wonderful and dangerous things about Apple is that Steve’s personal likes and dislikes tend strongly to color their products. Nonetheless, let’s hope that Apple has a smart, elegant solution under way for viewing and recording plain old television, because even if it only gets used for “American Idol,” it’s still a key to the mass market.
I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen, but it wouldn’t be too shocking to see Apple get cozier with TiVo, which already offers Rendezvous, Apple’s new networking standard for connecting devices automatically, on some of its digital video recorders.
