Batman: Caped Crusader, Prime Video’s quasi-spiritual successor to the beloved Batman: The Animated Series, dropped the first trailer for its second season today, and it shows off a somehow even darker tone than the series’ grim first outing. Oh, and the Joker shows up right at the end to really drive home the feel-bad vibes.
Batman: Caped Crusader was developed and is showrun by Bruce Timm, the creator of Batman: The Animated Series. Though it shares a lot of visual influence with BTAS, Caped Crusader has a decidedly more adult, pulp noir bent. According to a Prime Video press release, “Batman: Caped Crusader is a hard-boiled animated series that follows the fearsome vigilante in his early years. Forged in the fire of tragedy, billionaire Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the BATMAN. Night after night, against overwhelming odds, he wages his relentless one-man war on crime.”
Season one featured an array of classic Batman villains, including Two-Face, Clayface, and the Penguin. Season two will add the Riddler, the Joker, Scarecrow, and the Mad Hatter, among others. From the trailer, it looks like the Riddler is being set up as the main big bad. The Joker gets the last word in the trailer, though, much like he did with a quick tease at the end of season one. Elsewhere in the trailer, Gotham seems to pretty much be constantly on fire. Batman’s got a lot of work ahead of him.
Batman: Caped Crusader season two will drop all 10 of its episodes as a binge release on July 31.
