No one ever believed town treasure Bernie could have killed his companion, the insufferable snake woman Marjorie Nugent. Oh, well!

The eponymous Richard Linklater-directed dark comedy is based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article about unbelievable-but-true events that transpired in the small oil-rich Texas town of Carthage. After Marjorie becomes needier and meaner, Bernie can no longer bend to her whims. So he shoots her, maintaining the illusion that she’s still alive but just under the weather. And he’s so lovable—a member of the church choir, a friend to the friendless—that no one thinks him capable of such a dastardly deed. Spoiler alert: he’s guilty (but don’t worry, you know that all along). [Netflix]
