My own results came from the same samples on the same machine on the same day. Both blocked 99.8%. Norton raised 3 false alarms to Bitdefender’s 5, and AV-Comparatives had it the other way round at 9 to 4. Neither count is high enough to mean much. With the network unplugged, Bitdefender still detected 97.6% and Norton 96.3%Β in my comparison.
And once connected, Norton caught slightly more. Both also removed every infection from an already-infected test image in my malware removal testing. Nothing returned after a restart.

Norton blocked 95% of the phishing pages in my set and Bitdefender 89%, both with no false positives. AV-Comparatives’ June 2026 certification round put them at 93% and 87%. That’s a 6-point difference on my bench and at the lab, in the same month. Protection goes to Norton on phishing. On file detection, it’s a tie.

Left alone, the two are indistinguishable. Both use a fraction of a percent of CPU and under 200 MB of memory in the background. Norton finished the full scan 41 seconds sooner and used 23% CPU and 384 MB to do it. Bitdefender took longer at 11% and 183 MB, and startup was 4 seconds quicker with it installed. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test points the other way.
It gave Norton a performance score of 5.3 and Bitdefender 9.6, lower being better. That test times everyday tasks like copying files and opening apps. My figures measure the scan itself, which is when people notice their computer slowing down. System impact goes to Bitdefender. Norton keeps the faster scan.

Most people meet the VPN cap first. Bitdefender’s 200 MB a day covers a few checks on hotel Wi-Fi and little else. Lifting it costs $20 a year more on Premium Security, where Norton bundles unlimited Secure VPN from 360 Standard up. Bitdefender’s side has Safepay, Safe Files, Anti-Tracker, Advanced Threat Defense, and Ransomware Remediation.
That last one restored my files in testing but has to be switched on first, as covered in my ransomware protection test. Two things are US-only: Norton’s LifeLock features on Select Plus, and Bitdefender’s Identity Theft Protection, which requires a Social Security number. Features go to Norton.

The Bitdefender antivirus price starts at $24.99, $5 under Norton’s cheapest plan. It stays under Norton at renewal on every matched device count. The exception is the 5-device tier in year one, where Norton’s discount is deeper.

Over 2 years at 5 devices, the totals are $174.98 and $169.98, a per-device cost of $35.00 and $34.00, close enough that the plan contents settle it. At 1 and 3 devices, the price of Bitdefender antivirus is lower in both years. The 25-device Family Pack has no Norton equivalent. Year one is a split. Year two goes to Bitdefender.

The extra $10 in year one buys 50 GB of backup, an unlimited VPN, and Parental Control, which Bitdefender only sells on the Family Pack. Dark web monitoring is included too. Autopilot means the app needs no attention after install.
Ransomware Remediation, once enabled, restored every encrypted file I tested it on. My recommendation is Norton 360 Deluxe. Bitdefender Total Security vs Norton 360 is the better buy for one profile: a household with its own backup, no need for parental controls, and hardware where scan load is noticeable. That buyer gets the lighter suite and pays $15 less in year two.
Norton AntiVirus Plus vs Bitdefender Antivirus Plus
The entry plans both cover Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Norton AntiVirus Plus costs $29.99 for 1 device and renews at $59.99. It includes the Smart Firewall, a password manager, Scam Protection, and 2 GB of cloud backup. Compared with 360 Standard, it drops only the VPN and dark web monitoring. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus costs $24.99 for 1 device or $29.99 for 3, renewing at $49.99 and $69.99.
It includes Safepay, Ransomware Remediation, and the 200 MB VPN, with no password manager or firewall. For a single device, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is the better buy at $15 cheaper over two years. Its 3-device option also covers a phone and a laptop for the $29.99 Norton charges for one. Norton’s entry plan makes sense if the password manager is the reason for buying.
Apps and Everyday Use
Norton installed in 2 min 43 sec and activated every feature from one setup list. I turned off Cloud Backup and set the VPN to manual there. The dashboard has a left navigation and a control panel column of cards for scans, Scam Protection, Secure VPN, and backup. Dark Web Monitoring and account settings open in a browser window, which leaves the suite managed in 2 places.
Bitdefender took 3 min 58 sec, including an 843 MB download, with no offers during setup. The dashboard opens on an Autopilot recommendation card and a quick-action grid for scans, VPN, and Safepay. Autopilot makes the choices on its own. That’s ideal for a user who never opens the app. It’s less convenient for one who wants to tune it, because the working settings are two menus deep.
Both suites include Android and iOS apps. Norton 360 Deluxe includes Norton Mobile Security, and Total Security covers phones in its 5-device count.
Neither needs a separate mobile subscription.

On the phone, Norton only notifies on an unknown or suspicious network. Bitdefender keeps a permanent “We’re looking out for your device” notification in the shade, which I found to be more intrusive.
Bitdefender vs Norton on Mac
The Bitdefender vs Norton Mac question has a clearer answer than the Windows one. On my M1 MacBook Air, Bitdefender used 328 MB idle to Norton’s 432 MB, and added 5 seconds to startup to Norton’s 8. Its battery share was 4% to Norton’s 7%. Bitdefender detected 99.9% of Mac malware with 1 false alarm to Norton’s 99.7% with 2. Norton blocked more adware, 97% to 95%, and kept its phishing lead.
AV-TEST’s March 2026 macOS round scored both 6 / 6 / 6. Norton’s Mac build drops cloud backup, PC tune-up, and SafeCam. Bitdefender drops the firewall and swaps Safepay for the TrafficLight browser extension.
Deluxe subscribers on a Mac pay for 50 GB of storage they can’t use. Bitdefender is the better Mac buy.
Customer Support Compared
Both offer 24/7 chat, phone support, a knowledge base, and a community forum. Both put a bot in front of the chat. I asked each the same question, how to get a refund, and both answered accurately and offered to process one on the spot, with no refund form to fill in. Norton’s chatbot narrows the problem by category, offers self-help articles, and escalates to an agent on request.
I had a person in about 2 minutes, and the answer was accurate. The in-app support link was the weak point. It returned an HTTP 400 error every time, which leaves norton.com as the way in. Bitdefender’s live chat, opened from Bitdefender Central, connected me to a person in 3 min 21 sec. An email got a reply in 1 hour 13 minutes.
Its help center answered everything I checked without a ticket, and the community forum has active replies from Bitdefender staff. Support goes to Norton on time to a human, by about a minute. On the answer, the two were equal.
How Bitdefender and Norton Compare With Other Antivirus Brands
π Bitdefender vs Webroot
Webroot’s pitch is a tiny cloud-based client that installs in seconds and uses almost no disk space. It has no current independent record. AV-Comparatives last performance-tested it in 2012, and AV-TEST last certified it in 2019. There’s no 2026 figure to put beside Bitdefender’s 99.94% protection rate and 4 false alarms. Bitdefender’s footprint on my PC was 190 MB idle and 11% CPU during scans. Bitdefender vs Webroot goes to Bitdefender on evidence alone.
π Bitdefender vs TotalAV
TotalAV is sold mainly through affiliate marketing, and the lab record behind it is mixed. In AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 round, it posted 99.98% online protection, ahead of both Norton and Bitdefender. It also posted 19 false alarms, the highest count in the round’s “many” band, where Bitdefender had 4. Pricing is flat at $99 a year for 4 devices, $129 for 6 and $149 for 8, renewing at the same rate. TotalAV vs Bitdefender goes to Bitdefender on false alarms and on cost at every device count.
π Bitdefender vs AVG
AVG and Norton share an owner, Gen Digital, and a detection engine. AVG posted the same 99.97% and 9 false alarms as Norton at AV-Comparatives in March 2026. On my PC, it detected 99.77% with 4 false alarms and blocked 93% of phishing pages. AVG Internet Security costs $59.88 for 10 devices in year one and renews at $99.99, which undercuts Total Security on the device limit.
The AVG antivirus vs Bitdefender difference is the upsell pressure. AVG prompts an upgrade after every scan, even on a paid plan, whereas Bitdefender showed me none. Bitdefender wins, with AVG the pick for a 10-device household, as detailed in my AVG antivirus review.
π Bitdefender vs Surfshark
Surfshark Antivirus only exists as part of the Surfshark One bundle, a VPN subscription with a scanner. It costs $2.79 a month for 27 months and $99 a year after. On my PC, it detected 93.44% of malware with zero false alarms and blocked 95% of phishing pages. AV-TEST certified it in June 2026 at 6 / 4.5 / 6.
It has no firewall, parental controls, or ransomware rollback. Surfshark vs Bitdefender resolves by what’s being bought: Bitdefender for antivirus, Surfshark for a VPN on unlimited devices with basic scanning included.
Note on Bitdefender vs SentinelOne
Bitdefender vs SentinelOne only applies to an organization. SentinelOne has no home edition or retail price. Its Singularity platform is licensed per endpoint through resellers and IT service partners, and it assumes an IT team is watching the console. The consumer Bitdefender plans on this page aren’t in that market.
GravityZone is Bitdefender’s equivalent, and its small-business tier covers offices with no security staff. SentinelOne vs Bitdefender for one home computer has no answer, because SentinelOne doesn’t sell one.
