Immunology and virology tackle the question of how our body responds to pathogens new and old. By studying viruses in conjunction with our bodies’ defense systems, virologists and immunologists can help protect humans from future pathogens. Universities split and combine studies in immunology and virology in different ways, but the two fields are deeply interconnected. At our No. 1 school, the University of California, Los Angeles, immunology and virology are housed under the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics. The university has an affiliated hospital that has been a leader in immunology since the 1960s.
