The Aalborg zoo in Denmark is offering parents the ability to keep tabs on their kids via small Bluetooth pods that attach to their clothing:
Base stations scattered around a site detect nearby tags and relay their location to a central database via wireless LAN (local area network). Parents register their cell phones with the system and can get an update on their progeny’s position within 20 seconds of sending a query text message.
We’re generally creeped out by the idea of putting these things on people; while this does seem like a reasonable way to prevent kids from getting lost or abducted, it’s really only the first step to people demanding that their kids wear tracking tags 24/7.
