You would have been so proud of me. For two weeks or slightly more last month, I got up out of this chair and started running. And despite the fact that I can’t always be arsed to even go check the mail, I was ridiculously pleased with myself—until my knees decided to travel forward through time, live a separate life in the legs of an Olympic clog dancer, then warp back to me all in the space of a few seconds. So running’s out—they still hurt. All that to say, though, that I’ve been interested in low-impact fitness equipment again, lately, and these Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells caught my eye. The idea is simple: dial in the desired weight on the ends, and the dumbbells just pick up the plates that you need. It’s slick, giving you the granularity of a full set of free weights, without taking up all the room. Unfortunately, they’re also $400, which may not be as cheap as a comprehensive, brand-spanking set of dumbbells might be, but certainly more than a good, iron starter set costs. Looks like I’ll be sticking to freestyle yoga.
