Now that CBS has pulled the plug on Under the Dome, it has a hole in its schedule for next summer. And the replacement show, BrainDead, may actually be something pretty special. It deals with alien spawn eating the brains of “Congressmen and Hill staffers.”

BrainDead comes from the pen of Robert and Michelle King, creators of The Good Wife, who describe it as “The Strain crossed with The West Wing.” But, you know, funny. They told EW, “It seemed like the best way to address the news today – not straight, but as the opening act of a horror movie.”

CBS has already given BrainDead a direct-to-series order, so barring some horrible mishap we will actually see it in the summer of 2016. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim, The Thing, Death Proof) has just been cast in the lead role of Laurel, who is described as:

the daughter of a Democratic political dynasty who left Washington, D.C. to become a documentary filmmaker, but is pulled back into the family business when her brother, the senate majority whip, needs her help running his senate office. Now a young, fresh-faced Hill staffer, Laurel discovers two things: The government has stopped working, and alien spawn have come to Earth and eaten the brains of a growing number of congressmen and Hill staffers.

With the election lunacy in full swing next summer, this could be the gonzo political satire we desperately need. Here’s hoping! [EW]
