Brighter Lights, better LEDs. That’s what a reported breakthrough in white LEDs are promising, converting light using a purple LED and a silicon carbide substrate. Basically, this should convert light with more efficiency, giving us 130 lumens per watt rather than the dinky 70 lumens per watt we get now. Professor Satoshi Kamiyama of the Meijo University hopes to manufacture and sell these LEDs in a factory he plans to open this January, setting him back about 40 million yen.
