CBS has all but confirmed that Apple tried to launch a subscription streaming video service, but couldn't get enough content partners to sign on. Very interesting in light of the rumored Apple HDTV that's supposed to be on the way.
CBS CEO LES Moonves spilled the beans about the Apple TV service—or lack thereof—on the CBS earnings call yesterday. CBS refused a streaming deal for Apple TV because it wanted cash up front for its content, whereas Apple wanted to negotiate an advertising revenue split. If Apple HDTV really is on the way, don't expect this to be the last you hear of Apple's efforts to launch a subscription service it can pair with it. [Giga Om]
