These painted utility boxes were labelled ‘transformers,’ but could probably be some other kind of public box. Does anyone know where these are from?

Update Extreme: We, as a community of peers, have reached a consensus: they are either traffic light switching boxes or telephone punch-down racks. Thanks to everyone who chimed in!
