Maurice Sendak was important to us here at Gizmodo: His stories inspired us to follow our own internal compasses when our parents told us to stop wasting our time skateboarding or making movies or playing with gadgets. In an unhappy coincidence, we visited Best Made Co.’s New York City workshop on the day of Sendak’s death. They were pretty broken up about it.

But like all great makers of wonderful objects, they took their feelings about the day’s news and made something out of them. A badass axe. We were lucky enough to watch them work on it. It’s so cool—Max’s Axe, as it’s called, looks like one of Sendak’s wild things: colorful, spotted, playfully dangerous. See for yourself. [Best Made Co.]
