Everything we’ve seen from Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, has been heavy on mystery. In the film, which is out June 12, aliens exist and live among us. But who are they? What are they? What are they doing here? How long have they been here? And, most importantly, who is covering it up?

But even beyond that, the trailers so far have not offered much in terms of who, or what, the main characters are. We know they’re played by Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and others. But who is who and how do they all fit in?

Empire Magazine has a big, exclusive story on the new Spielberg film, and the coverage finally makes those roles known. Here’s how it breaks down.

  • Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, “a journalist who career-pivots into weather.” That certainly implies she’s not doing something she wants to be doing, does it not?
  • Josh O’Connor is Daniel Kellner, “a cyber-security expert who’s stumbled upon highly-classified knowledge, placing a target firmly on his back.” This we kind of discerned from the trailers, but we also kind of thought he was an alien. Maybe he isn’t.
  • Eve Hewson plays Jane Blakenship, “Daniel’s girlfriend, facing her own fallout from his quest for the truth.” The trailers show her playing a significant role, so we’re very curious how, if at all, that relates to her relationship.
  • Colin Firth is the bad guy, Noah Scanlon. He’s the “leader of Wardex, contracted by the government to keep the biggest secret in the cosmos.” The trailer also shows that as this person, he seemingly uses the alien technology, so it’s more than keeping the secret. It’s exploiting it.
  • Finally, there’s Colman Domingo as Hugo Wakefield, who is also an employee of Wardex but is described as “an advocate for disclosure. And, possibly, a stand-in for Steven Spielberg himself.” He seems to be at odds with Firth’s ideals.

So what do we learn here? Not too much. There’s a big company protecting this massive secret, and out of there, we get several of our main characters. Guess we’ll have to wait until June to find out the rest.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, Disclosure Day opens June 12.
