Apple products rarely go on sale which makes any discount on the brand-new AirPods Max 2 worth a look. Amazon currently has the Midnight version on sale for $479, down from its $549 list price, a 13% cut that lops $70 off Apple’s newest over-ear headphones. This is the model with the H2 chip, up to 1.5 times stronger noise cancellation than the original, lossless audio over USB-C and live translation.
What Actually Changed With the AirPods Max 2
The headline upgrade is the H2 chip which is the same silicon Apple uses in the AirPods Pro. The original AirPods Max ran on the older H1, which limited what Apple could do with noise cancellation and audio processing. With the H2, Apple claims up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) than the first generation, measured under the IEC 60268-24 standard.
The H2 also unlocks Adaptive Audio, which blends noise cancellation and transparency automatically depending on what’s happening around you, and Conversation Awareness, which drops the volume and lets voices through the moment you start talking. Both were previously AirPods Pro exclusives. Personalized Spatial Audio uses your iPhone’s TrueDepth camera to tune the sound to your ear shape, and dynamic head tracking keeps the soundstage fixed in place when you turn your head, which is the closest headphones get to a home theater.
The most talked-about new feature is live translation: Press and hold the listening mode button and Apple Intelligence translates whoever is speaking into your language, with the translated speech playing in your ears. It is in beta, requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later, and is not available in every region, but as a travel tool it is a legitimately new use for a pair of headphones.
Audio quality gets a bump too: Apple describes the tuning as deeper bass and cleaner mids and highs, and the USB-C port now carries lossless audio when wired to a Mac, iPad or iPhone, something the original Max famously could not do despite its price. The design is otherwise familiar: the knit-mesh canopy, memory foam ear cushions wrapped in textile, aluminum cups and telescoping arms are all still here, and the Midnight colorway on sale is the darkest of the five available.
Battery life is rated at up to 20 hours with ANC and Spatial Audio on, unchanged from before, which remains the weak point against rivals that stretch past 30. The smart case that puts the headphones to sleep is still the only case included. And the usual Apple caveat applies: on an Android phone, the AirPods Max 2 work as standard Bluetooth headphones and lose Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio, live translation and seamless switching.
