The latest version of Sony’s CoCoon digital video recorder, the NDR-XR1, can record up to 90 hours of television programming, but here’s the kicker: it also has a built-in DVD burner that you can use to archive shows that are recorded on the hard drive. TiVo doesn’t have the guts to put out a box that does this, and it’s too early to tell whether Sony would risk the television industry’s wrath and release the NDR-XR1 in the US. Let’s hope they do.
