Epic 70-Minute Phantom Menace Review Justifies the Existence of The Phantom Menace

You probably don't think there's any way you'd ever watch a 70-minute-long YouTube dismantling of the first horrible Star Wars prequel. And you'd be wrong, because this is one of the best things ever.

Seriously, just start watching the first one if you don't believe me. And really, are you going to argue with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, who discovered this and said "Your life is about to change. This is astounding film making. Watch ALL of it."? I didn't think so. [YouTube via Damon Lindelof]

Okay, yeah. SO I'm pretty sure Strongbad from HomestarRunner is voicing this. But okay anyway... I hate defending Episode One. I don't like doing it because it wasn't good. There are only two things that I can say that were good about it. The sound. It was great. The sound design during the Pod-Racing scene gave me goosebumps. The protagonist for me was the audio. But when it comes to the characters, and the section of the clip that starts comparing classic characters to new ones, the comparison isnt fair. The characters from the classic films are a part of our culture now. Sure they are based on caricatures, but the popularity of Han Solo et. al. have almost come to re-define the caricatures. I can describe Qui-Gon: Hes the voice of reason and discipline, he is what the 'story' bumps up against to create tension in lieu of a character. Because the audience already knows what is going to happen and because of the popularity and ubiquity od Star Wars in society, one could say that the protagonist in this film was the audience.
