EV-DO or don’t?

Verizon Wireless has just launched the first wireless service to use the new EV-DO network. Forgive us if we greet it with a big yawn: EV-DO looks like yet another “high-speed” connection which overpromises and under delivers. EV-DO has a maximum connection speed of 2.4Mbps, but 150Kbps is more what you should expect. It’s just like GPRS, which assuming you can even get a decent connection, is more likely to give you a connection around 10 or 20Kbps rather than the 115Kbps that’s promised. If they’re having trouble getting above 200Kbps now, what’s it going to be like when the service rolls out and thousands of people are trying to log on at the same time?
