There was once a time when you actually had to leave your home to get a prostitute. And what a long, seedy walk to the docks or brothel or alley behind Denny’s it was. Now? Facebook does it for you!
According to Columbia University sociology professor Sudhir Venkatesh, of the 290 New York City prostitutes he tracked, a full quarter were using Facebook to solicit clients. And that was three years ago—I have a feeling it’s only ballooned since then (especially with the handy improved messaging system!). Venkatesh estimates that by now, “Facebook will be the leading on-line recruitment space” for hookers. So yes, there is something you can do on Facebook that’s creepier than ogling high school girls.
