Jim Louderback predicts a somber future for TiVo in this article at PC Magazine. He gives three reasons for its Imminent Death Syndrome: the increasing irrelevance of brand in the PVR market, TiVo’s terrible, late-entry HDTV option, and Rupert Murdoch’s (owner of DirecTV) thriftiness likely leading to a replacement of TiVo as the PVR vendor for DirecTV. TiVo fans have always used TiVo’s quality directory service as a fall-back argument, but with alternate subscription (and even free) programming schedules available, that may not be a factor for much longer.
