Following in Atari’s footsteps

You’re probably already tired of hearing about Microsoft’s plan to use FM subcarrier transmissions to update watches and other gadgets that use its new SPOT technology and how it’s already been tried before. All of us here at Gizmodo HQ certainly are. But did you know that in the Eighties Atari had a crazy plan to deliver new games for the 2600 over the airwaves using the same 12 kbps FM subcarrier system that Microsoft is planning to use? Atari games were only 4K, so transmitting an entire game over radio waves actually wouldn’t have taken very long.
