Garmin’s elite-level health and fitness smartwatch apps are hardly a secret, nor is the fact that flagship performance usually comes at flagship prices. Usually, that is, and the exception to that rule is Garmin’s vívoactive 5, which you can find now at Amazon for just $182 in the Ivory model. (The other three color models are also on sale, ranging in price from $189 to $200.)
This isn’t a second-tier Garmin with a few fitness apps bolted on. The vívoactive 5 carries the same Body Battery energy monitoring and sleep coaching infrastructure that Garmin puts in watches three times the price, in a slim case that doesn’t look like you pulled it off a mountaineer. Body Battery is the feature that separates Garmin’s health tracking from a basic step counter, and the vívoactive 5 has the full implementation. The watch tracks sleep, naps, stress, and workout recovery simultaneously and synthesizes them into a single energy score that updates throughout the day. The sleep coaching feature adds a second layer, giving you a nightly sleep score alongside HRV status and personalized recommendations for sleep duration and quality.
Your Sport Is Here
The sports and fitness side covers more than 30 built-in GPS and indoor activities, including running, cycling, swimming, HIIT, golf, Pilates, and more. Garmin added workout benefit analysis and recovery time estimates after each session. Workout benefit tells you whether a given effort contributed to aerobic base, lactate threshold, or speed. This kind of feedback was limited to dedicated training watches not long ago. The watch also supports Garmin Coach adaptive training plans for running and connects to Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer for on-device music storage, so you can leave your phone behind on a run.
The vívoactive 5’s health monitoring extends to wrist-based heart rate, stress tracking, menstrual cycle and pregnancy tracking, fitness age, and a morning report that rolls overnight data into a daily summary before you’ve had coffee. Wheelchair mode replaces step tracking with push counts and includes handcycle activities and wheelchair-specific challenges.
11 Days Before Recharging
Battery life runs up to 11 days in standard smartwatch mode, or five days with the always-on AMOLED display active. Those are competitive figures for a watch this slim, and at this price, not having to deal with charging anxiety is a nice bonus.
At $182 for the Ivory model at Amazon, the vívoactive 5 sits at a price where it competes with fitness trackers that do significantly less, while still remaining well below Garmin’s Venu and Forerunner lines. The tradeoff versus a more expensive Garmin is mainly cellular connectivity and advanced training metrics like running power — features most buyers at this price point will not miss. For the person who wants Garmin’s health ecosystem on a watch that passes for everyday wear, this is a far lower bar to clear than usual.
