Looks like Wal-Mart will be carrying a DVD player with the ClearPlay-developed technology that strips nudity, violence, and foul language from DVDs. There is a catch, natch: the $70 DVD player doesn’t detect the moral transgressions as they play, but instead uses pre-loaded filters that must be purchased from ClearPlay, from $20 for unlimited access to ‘classic’ movies (90 days old or more) or an additional monthly fee of $4.95.
Sounds awful (every punched alien is a treasured moment to me), but end users should be able to do what they want with their purchased media, even if what they want to do might seem sort of ridiculous to others. (That was today’s Freedom Moment™.)
