Satellite phones had all but dropped out of public consciousness these past few years, but now with journalists using them to report on the war in Iraq MobileTracker has a timely post on how you can get your own satellite phone. They’re surprisingly cheap. Qualcomm has a $600 handset out, which is about what you might expect to pay for the P800 from Sony Ericsson. And the plans aren’t too bad either, Globalstar’s plan costs $34.95 for 30 minutes of airtime a month, with extra minutes costing 99 cents. The coverage sounds great as well: “when you click for the coverage map it s just the entire Earth. It s a beautiful thing.”
