Gizmodo Is Looking for a Temporary Editor-in-Chief (3-Month Contract, Parental Leave Cover)

Gizmodo is looking for a sharp, experienced Temporary Editor-in-Chief to lead the newsroom during a three-month parental leave. This role is ideal for an experienced editor who can jump in fast, manage a multi-team operation, and keep our coverage authoritative, timely, and full of voice.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the newsroom across four editorial desks (Consumer Tech, Tech News, io9, and Science)
  • Manage and support direct reports, providing guidance, feedback, and day-to-day editorial direction
  • Run recurring staff meetings, including weekly staff meetings and 1:1s
  • Oversee weekly editorial planning, long-term planning, conference coverage, tentpoles, and seasonal coverage
  • Oversee the monthly freelance editorial budget
  • Maintain editorial quality and voice, keeping Gizmodo’s storytelling sharp and its angles fresh

What You Bring

  • Experience leading a digital newsroom or major editorial team; past EIC, Managing Editor, or senior editor experience strongly preferred
  • A sharp, authoritative editing voice with a strong grasp of tech and internet culture
  • Proven ability to manage teams, set priorities, and maintain morale in a fast-moving news environment
  • Excellent judgment, communication skills, and a steady hand under pressure
  • Ability to step into a complex newsroom quickly and keep operations running smoothly

Contract Details

  • Three-month contract covering parental leave
  • Start date mid-to-late November
  • Expected full-time availability during business hours (Mon–Fri)
  • Remote-friendly; EST hours strongly preferred
  • Competitive pay, commensurate with experience
