Google added bike lanes and bicycle directions to Google Maps today, allowing you to find routes that aren't too hilly or congested. It's pretty awesome!

Bike functionality is available for over 150 American cities at the moment, but it's safe to assume that, like everything Google does, it will eventually expand to cover most of the planet. [Google Maps via Physorg]

DISCUSSION

While I appreciate Google's efforts, it is one thing to map bicycle lanes - it is another to actually get cities to create them. Heck, add sidewalks to that list, too. Some cities are more accommodating than others, but it is frustrating. Then again, maybe if Google adds an application that finds the cities severely deficient in creating bicycle lanes and sidewalks and has it automatically email the public officials in those locations every thirty seconds, this might become quite useful.
