Google's Project Volta Fights Dying Smartphone Batteries With Science

At Google I/O today, the search-and-everything-else giant unveiled a new mobile tool to help your smartphone survive to the end of the day. Say hello to Project Volta.

Volta is a data-heavy way to help boost your battery life and give you insight into what's draining your mobile device's juice. Take a look and see which apps are hogging your battery, and what time of day you blow through the most energy.

And there's a smart Battery Saver feature, which shuts off certain apps when you're low on power. It'll even go so far as to cut off your Wi-Fi and dim your display. Google says these tricks can give you an extra 90 minutes of battery life, which doesn't sound like a lot—until you're at 1% and nowhere near a charger.
