Govee’s COB LED strip light pro is the grown-up version and it just got cheaper: Amazon currently has the 9.8-foot strip on sale for $74.98, down from its $99.99 list price, which is a 25% cut on a strip that packs 1,260 LEDs per meter, adds dedicated warm white diodes to the usual RGB and works natively with Matter, Alexa, Google Assistant and HomeKit.
Why COB Strips Look So Different From the Cheap Ones
The technology that matters here is COB, short for chip-on-board. Instead of spacing individual LEDs along the strip and hoping a diffuser hides the gaps, COB strips pack the diodes so densely that the light merges into one continuous line. Govee’s Pro version uses 1,260 LEDs per meter, encased in a soft silicone sleeve, and the result is a smooth band of light with no visible dots even when the strip is mounted in plain view rather than hidden behind a TV or under a cabinet.
The second upgrade over standard RGB strips is the “W” in RGBICW: Ordinary strips fake white by mixing red, green and blue, which produces a slightly bluish, washed-out glow. This one adds dedicated warm white lamp beads, so when you want the strip to act as actual lighting, under kitchen cabinets or as a bedroom accent, it produces a soft, natural white that looks like a proper lamp instead of a screen.
The IC in the name stands for independent control, and Govee’s app lets you address 12 segments per meter individually. That is what allows the flowing color effects, gradients that move along the strip, and DIY scenes where different sections show different colors at once. The Govee Home app ships with a long list of preset scenes and a music mode that reacts to sound, plus scheduling and timers. The 4.4-star rating on Amazon suggests users are broadly happy, with most complaints centering on app setup rather than the hardware itself.
Smart home support is where this strip separates itself from the no-name competition: Matter certification means it works with every major platform without a proprietary hub, so it shows up in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa and responds to voice commands to change color, dim or switch off. If you already have a Matter setup, adding it takes a QR scan. If you don’t, the Govee app handles everything over Wi-Fi on its own.
Installation is peel-and-stick, with an adhesive backing Govee says has been reinforced compared to its older strips, which had a habit of sagging off walls after a warm summer. The strip can be cut every 8cm at marked points to fit the exact length you need, though it is worth noting you cannot rejoin the offcuts without a separate connector kit. It is rated for indoor use only, and it plugs into a wall outlet via the included adapter, so there is no battery to worry about.
