Like many MVNOs, Helio—the one for kids—is finding it rough going. While the business model seems sound—sell cheap telephone and Internet connectivity to cool teens—it costs Helio $300 to gain a subscriber and after investing $440 in Sprint’s EVDO network, investors SK Telecom and Earthlink have to recoup their loses pretty quickly before someone—probably Sprint—pulls the plug.
Growing pains? Sure. Death rattle? Not yet.
