Reading time 1 minute

In a land that time forgot—but just for a second, then time was like, “Oh, duh. America!”—there was a fancy little automotive audio system called the Chrysler “Hiway Hi-Fi,” that used nothing so fantastic as a magnetic tape, but instead a proprietary type of record developed by CBS Labs with music from Columbia Records. Surprisingly, the Hiway Hi-Fi died a quick death, but not before enticing motorists to look into other, perhaps less-restricted formats. And one day, from the ashes of a wrecked ’57 Chrysler Saurus, rose up the format that would someday rule us all: 8-track.
