Holy Giant Steel Balls!

What weighs 4.5 tons, measures 8 feet in diameter, it’s made of pure steel, and can destroy 50 acres of woods per hour? The bowling ball lumbering machine, that’s what.

Back in the 50s, it was believed to be the be-all, end-al of all lumbering techniques ever developed. Get the ball, set it in motion using two tractors, and watch it snap any tree across its path like toothpicks. I don’t know if it’s the best method to lumber, but it sure looks like a lot more fun than motor saws. If your idea of fun is destroying trees, that is. [Modern Mechanix]
