IBM’s Fractalizer Turns Any Tumblr Into a Trippy Fractal

IBM’s engineers must have been at a loose end, because they’ve just launched a new site called the IBMblr Fractalizer, which takes any Tumblr and spits it out as a series of fractals.

It’s part of a small celebration by IBM of Benoit Mandelbrot, who discovered back in 1978 that nature’s repetitive and complex patterns seem to be based on simple math. In fact, zoom in on a fractal and it looks exactly the same as it did before you were zoomed out: complexity continues, however closely you look.

The images above and below are, as you might have guessed, what happens if you run kimjongillookingatthings.tumblr.com though the filter. What’s nice is that many of the resulting images are interactive, so you can tweak the appearance of the fractals by moving your mouse around the image. Obviously, it’s too much fun not to try so head to the Fractalizer and give it a go. [IBM via Verge]
