An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 struck northern New Jersey on Friday morning, shaking millions of Americans in New York City and along the East Coast. The quake was strong enough to rattle some dishes but resulted in fairly minimal damage. However, strong reverberations of the earthquake were felt on social media, where memes spread about the event spread like wildfire.

Many New Yorkers experienced an earthquake for the first time on Friday. New York City scrambled to respond to the event with Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul holding emergency press conferences. The city also sent out mobile alerts to users about the earthquake, though the alert came out roughly 30 minutes too late.

However, the earthquake was also felt in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and even some folks in Vermont said they felt a shake. For once, people in California felt left out of the memes that take place after a benign earthquake, as the East Coasters reveled in it.

For a moment, we all felt something, then we tweeted about it. Within minutes after the earthquake happened, people on X were already posting jokes. Gizmodo collected the best memes from the earthquake for your enjoyment. Enjoy.
